Within blood donation, the person receiving the blood has to have a blood type which is compatible with that of the donor. The blood type relates to the
presence or absence of certain antigens. Antigens in donated blood can trigger an immune response if they are foreign to the body. However, platelets don't carry any specific anti-body or antigen that would need to be matched up between the donor and recipient. Therefore, anyone can act as a donor of platelets to any patient.
