catalysts assist enzymes in their function. They lower the activation energy of the enzyme, thus lowering the amount of time it takes for the enzyme to work. (Enzymes themselves are used in an organism to break apart substances, mainly macromolecules.) Summarizing, the catalyst speeds up the chemical reaction
