Calcium channel blockers work to decrease blood pressure by dilating smooth muscle found in the cardiovascular system, reducing conductivity and decreasing the force of contraction of the heart. The mechanism of action is to reduce the ability of calcium to enter into the muscles of the heart and blood vessels.
