Let "a" represent Alex' age.  Translating the given sentence into symbols, 

a = 3(a-2).  Thus, a = 3a - 6, or 6 = 2a, or a = 3.

Alex is 3 years old now.   (Answer)

2 years ago he was (3-2), or 1, year old.  three times that does equal 3.
