Vertebrate striated muscle contraction is controlled (regulated) by the action of the proteins troponin and tropomyosin on the actin filaments. Nervous stimulationcauses a depolarisation of the muscle membrane (sarcolemma) which triggers therelease of calcium ions from the sarcoplasmic reticulum.
