Explain the endosymbiotic theory of the origin of eukaryotic cells

The theory tells us that eukaryotes evolved through a process of prokaryotic organisms being incorporated into one. The larger of the prokaryotic organisms would surround the smaller ones that later developed into the organelles we know today (mitochondria, chloroplasts, etc.).
