A rectangle 28 in. long has the same area as a square with 14 in. sides. What is the width of the rectangle?

This will be solved from the concept of area of a rectangle and that of a square.

Width of the rectangle = 7 inches

  • Area of a rectangle = length × width
  • Area of a square = side × side

  • Now, we are told that the square has sides of 14 inches each.

Thus;

Area of square = 14 × 14 = 196 in²

  • We are told the area of the square is equal to that of the rectangle and the rectangle has a length of 28 in.

Thus;

28 × width = 196

Width = 196/28

Width = 7 inches
