5x-4=26 <=> 5x=26+4
              <=> x=30/5
              <=> x=6

What you do is you want to isolate the variable and then simplify if needed.

Add 4 to both sides to get:
5x=30
Then divide both sides to isolate the variable:
x=6
so the answer is:
x=6
