Who were the group that the southerners called carpetbaggers

I had to look it up :) A Carpetbagger was a Northerner that moved to the south after the Civil War. From what I understand the name Carpetbagger was used because these Northerner's carried bags (luggage). I'm still thinking it was the Republicans. Look it up though to be sure.
