Why was the court case Gibbons v. Odgen important for American history?

Gibbons v. Ogden was a landmark Supreme Court case that was decided in 1824. In this case the Supreme Court ruled that Congress had the right to regulate naval navigation because of their powers in relation to the Commerce Clause. The Commerce Clause grants Congress the power to regulate interstate commerce.
