Positivism is the theory that laws are to be understood as social rules, valid because they are enacted by authority or derive logically from existing decisions. Functionalism is the theory that all aspects of a society serve a function and are necessary for the survival of that society. They are related because they are derived from realist perspectives of societal functionality.
