What does the term electrically neutral mean when discussing ionic compounds?

If you look at ionic compound, they are formed by a metal and a nonmetal. A metal is a positive ion after losing electron(s) and a nonmetal is a negative ion after gaining electron(s). Since there are both + and -, they are now electrically neutral.
