Why was the theory of the atom so controversial back in the early 1900's

Well, it introduced atoms in this world and their functions. When the theory of atoms were created many more theory's came and we slowly figure out what the atoms do and what their functions are. The theory of an atom really surprised people because most of the people never knew the possibility of having living things inside of them.
