Let x be the number. 

5 - 2x = 7
5 - 5 - 2x = 7 - 5
-2/-2x = 2/-2
x = -1

The number is -1.

5-2x=7      

so 5- the 2 and the x next to it implies that they are multiplied and that together equal 7
