Answer: 14 dimes and 26 nickels

Explanation:

Dime = 0.10$
Nickel = 0.05$

Assume that all the coins were dimes

40 x 0.10$ = 4$

4$ - 2.7$ = 1.3$

1.3$/0.05$ = 26

Thus, 26 coins are nickels.

40 - 26 = 14

And 14 coins are dime.

Let’s check:

14(0.10) + 26(0.05) = 2.7$
1.4$ + 1.3$ = 2.7$
2.7$ = 2.7$
