Lynn Margulis proposed the endosymbiotic theory. The theory states that eukaryotic cells evolved from a symbiotic relationship between free-living bacteria and a protist cell. A eukaryotic cell would go through phagocytosis and engulfs bacteria. This bacteria later evolved into either mitochondria or cholorplasts.
