[tex]a-b=12[/tex], since

[tex]a^2-b^2=(a-b)(a+b)[/tex]

and when [tex]a\neq-b[/tex], we have

[tex]\dfrac{a^2-b^2}{a+b}=\dfrac{(a-b)(a+b)}{a+b}=a-b=12[/tex]
