People went on crusades to or pilgrimages for either their faith in Christianity or for personal gain.

Explanation:

Some people believed in the call to action by the Pope and believed it was their duty. Many landowner and lords felt obliged to lead by example and encouraged others to do so. This gave them social benefits within their community. Some people were looking for absolving to their sins. However, many crusaders saw the opportunity to bring riches back from sacked cities or to possibly gain land.
