Our Town is an unconventional play, and one of the ways in which the play is unusual is in the fact that the dead can spend time with the living. This happens, for example, when Emily decides to spend one more day on Earth. Although she cannot interact with the living, she can observe them. And she is heartbroken to realize how the living waste so much time worrying about unimportant things, and how blind they can be to the good things life has to offer.
