Look at the picture.

Use the Pythagorean theorem:

[tex]x^2+13^2=16^2[/tex]

[tex]x^2+169=256[/tex]       subtract 169 from both sides

[tex]x^2=87\to\boxed{x=\sqrt{87}\approx9.3}[/tex]
