For starters, Total War is when all of the resources and population are used towards the War effort. They attack everything on the opposing side, not just soldiers, but citizens, food, supplies, etc. WWI is considered a Prime example of Total War because of Trench Warfare. Citizens got caught in the crossfire, and Mechanization, Industrialization and Nationalism helped WWI becoming a Total War. Everyone got behind one goal.
