The term used to refer the newly discovered land was New World.
In 1507 the map maker Martin Waldseemüller invented the word America in honor to Americo Vespucio, who travelled at least twice to the New World and wrote a couple of works where he demonstrates that the recently found land is a ne continent and not Asia, as Columbus thought.
