both use positive sounding word and direct terms

Figurative language is when you use a sentence, and don't actually mean what you're saying - like a different definition. 

Connotative meaning is when different meanings in a sentence. 

The similarity is that they both don't use the literal language they give, they have a different meaning that gives a message.
