The Joplin, Missouri was struck by a catastrophic EF5-rated tornado in the late afternoon of Sunday, May 22, 2011. It killed 160 people, injured 1,150 others and destroyed over 2,000 homes, hundreds of local schools and businesses. It was one of the most destructive and deadliest tornadoes in history.
